1. Start with the End in Mind

A clear plan can help you stray too far off the subject and improve the overall flow of the content. First, get everything out on paper. Write out a bullet-pointed outline of what you want to say. It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t totally make sense at first, you’ll get there!

Sometimes the best ideas come from the wildest of brainstorms. People read what you write because they want value and find your perspective valuable. Often a bullet-pointed list of items you want to cover can help keep your mind flowing and uncover a unique perspective that others may not have considered!

2. Set Goals

Regardless of the platform, everything you publish should have a purpose. Set a clear goal or have a purpose in mind with at least one measurable Key Performance Indicator (KPI) to show the return on investment (your time). What are you trying to do with the post? Common goals include:

3. Research Before you Write

Once you know what you want to write about, do your research. As writers, we tend to write what we know, but no one knows everything. Make sure you do your research and keep track of your sources. Citing sources helps with credibility. Don’t stop at researching the topic, understand how to manipulate Google to work in your favor!

Research Google keywords that are relevant to your subject and include them organically through your post. This will help Google algorithms help readers to find you!

What Google Algorithms Consider when Deciding what to Suggest

Google has at least 200 factors it considers when ranking content. Google’s goal is to help users find the most accurate information they seek as fast as possible.

Interestingly enough, in order for Google to consider a post a be recognized and ranked as a "blog post" it must be at least 300 words, however, don't go too crazy, studies show that the ideal length is 1,600 words for maximum engagement. Length of a blog also has an impact on overall social reach and virality.

To analyze data and help reach their goal, Google is known to utilize 5 different algorithms (next generations of previous algorithms) that all build off each other. 

The algorithms all have cute names too! Specifically, they are Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird, Pigeon, and Fred.

Ultimately, these algorithms analyze three main themes when deciding where to refer inquirers:

  1. A deep and meaningful message
  2. Completely comprehensive content

4. Strategize for the Audience Experience

No matter the subject, long posts (like this one) can cause users to get fatigued and lose interest before they even start. To help avoid this there are several things you can do.

  • Have a clear introduction, body, and conclusion in mind

    • This lets people know what to expect and brings them to a satisfying conclusion

  • Visually break up the content into visually digestible bites

    • This can be done with bullet points, Video content, Pictures, and lists

      • Google wants to answer questions and often will use lists to find the fastest answer, so including them is a great way to boost potential organic SEO!

    • Keep paragraphs under five lines wherever possible

Here are some final simple things you can do to really take your blog entry or social post to the next level:

  1. Remember that you are writing for humans.

    1. People appreciate things like effective humor where appropriate to help ease tension or draw them back in

  2. Use both internal and external cross-links to help the audience learn more

    1. Directing them to past articles or other pages on your website helps support your point or can help them understand what to do next, while external links show that you are not biased, selfish, and have their overall best interest in mind.  

      1. This also helps with SEO as Google loves things that keep people on your website and increase the amount of time they spend with your content!

  3. Use custom images

    1. People love a unique experience. No one wants to see the same thing repeatedly. Having custom images helps to underline your unique perspective and adds just a little more value!

    2. Include a header image (banner) but make sure it looks good if shared across social media

  4. Don’t forget the Call To Action (CTA)!

    1. Help your readers understand what to do with the information you have just provided!
