What is Google Tag Manager?
If traffic to websites is increasing daily, optimizing your digital presence has never been more crucial. This also means being able to track and harness data about what people are doing once they reach your site is even more critical. In this month’s edition of GRIP Tips and Tricks Training Session, the digital marketing team at Global Reach introduces a powerful and free tool offered by Google: Google Tag Manager (GTM).
Google Tag Manager is a tag management system that allows you to manage, test, and deploy snippets of code or tracking pixels. Tracking pixels are often referred to as “tags” and they collect bits of data about your website users. You may not know this, but tags are used for pretty much everything, whether we’re talking about Google Analytics, Facebook, Twitter, AdWords, etc.
What GTM platform offers is the free and simple opportunity to manage and track tags all in one place without having to manually edit any kind of code; in fact, it is virtually codeless! No need to be a savvy social media marketer or website developer with the help of GTM! It is a powerful and effective tool to gain critical marketing data about what users are doing on your site. You can take potential customers to full-fledged consumers of products or services once you understand their behaviors.
How Does Google Tag Manager Work?
GTM takes a web-based user interface approach. This allows you to set up tags, offering over 90 templates (ready-made tracking scripts), establish triggers that cause your tag to fire when certain events occur, and create variables that can be used to simplify and automate your tags. And this is all done with a few clicks.

The benefit of using a tool made by Google is that they really work hard to make everything easily accessible and understandable. If tracking along with the prompts to set up a tag, trigger or variable are proving difficult, finding helpful tutorials will not be a problem.

He demonstrated how to create and name a tag; how to establish a trigger; and how to preview these marketing measurements live on a website.
Additionally, Matt also provided a brief explanation of how Tag Manager interacts with the tag, or tracking pixel, of Google Analytics.
