It seems that in America every month has a widely accepted or nationally recognized holiday… well… except for August (seriously, can you think of a national holiday in August? We couldn't either! What gives?!). With Christmas and New Year’s just around the corner, now is a great time for brands to connect with customers on a more personal level.

Has your business created special social media posts for holidays?

If not, you should. A successful social media marketing strategy requires a personal approach. Your overall social message must go beyond “buy from us!” & “Look at how great we are!” and offer real value. Sometimes that value can be found in simply reminding your followers that behind your business is a team of people.

It doesn’t matter if your platform of choice is Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, Myspace, or some other platform (ok, it matters if you are on Myspace. It may be time to consider your strategy overall if you’re still leaning heavily on Myspace), holiday posts should be a part of your digital marketing approach.

Do Holiday Posts Matter?

Yes! Consumers connect with their favorite brands on social media for many reasons. Sure, they want special promotions and discounts, but they also want to feel like an insider. Customers love it when companies peel back the curtain and show that there are people behind the brand. Sometimes they want to see how work is being done with behind-the-scenes peeks or employee spotlights. Ultimately, your customers and followers like to know that they are doing business with actual, real-life people.

There is nothing that makes people feel more connected to people than the various holidays we celebrate. Holidays are a part of our culture.

Ideally, the holidays are a time we can set aside our differences and come together to appreciate the people around us. Holiday posts, especially ones that have custom images and/or video, are a great way to remind followers that someone at your company took the time to create a custom post “just for them”.

What Should Social Posts Include?

As we’ve said in a past Blog, successful social media posts in general are as easy as 1,2,3.

 “As a rule, to maximize your post’s organic reach, each post should include the following:

  1. A piece of selfless content that adds value to your audience- the most important aspect to a person’s time is W.I.I.F.M. (What’s In It For Me)? Give them a reason to share!

  2. Something visual to engage with- posts with a custom video or photo element have a much higher engagement rate than text-only posts.

  3. A call to action - this can be a link, a contact us, call now or message us button. Posts must have some way to encourage customers to get in touch.”

But What if I Don’t Have Time?

As we’ve pointed out previously, as many as “79% of American internet users are on Facebook.” Saying that your company doesn’t have time for social media is like saying you don’t have time for communicating with your customers. You have three options:

  1. Make time. With the ability to schedule posts in advance, there is no reason not to block out a couple of hours a month to schedule the entire month’s social posts.

  2. Have someone on your staff make time. Utilizing your current resource pool is always a good idea!

  3. Hire an expert. We know social media can be overwhelming. Knowing when, what, and where to post, what to boost (if you should boost), how social posts affect SEO, wrangling analytics, and answering customer comments, messages, and tags, can be a lot of work. Outsourcing your social media strategy, or at the very least consulting with experts is a great way to create an actual long-term strategy, instead of simply posting whatever, whenever and hoping something hits!

Taking the time to plan, create, and execute social posts is important. Having a strong, relatable message behind your strategy is how you make a real impact. Holiday posts are a great way to start, if you haven’t already!
