For the Love of the Game or the Commercials?

We’ve all been aware of the infamous Super Bowl commercials for as long as we can remember. Even with many companies choosing to “leak” their commercials early on YouTube, some people tune in specifically for the commercials. And why not? The most expensive commercials of the year are a great way to increase company or brand awareness and showcase specific products, but have you ever wondered how Big Game commercials impact search results?

A Plausible Scenario

Say Tide has the most popular commercial regarding their infamous, and inedible, Pods. Yes, it may influence a 49ers fan to go pick up a pouch of pods at Walmart the next day, or it could make a Chiefs fan laugh for 10 seconds and move on the 11th.

“Is that 30 seconds commercial really going to influence fans to head to Tide’s website to check out all the wonderful new Pod additions?”

Possibly, but unless the commercial has a specific call to action driving people to the website, probably not. That is where SMO comes in very handy.

SMO stands for Social Media Optimization and is a crucial step in your company’s social success. Are you wanting more people to head to your website or see your social media content? SMO is a key aspect for getting your content in front of more people, more affordably, and it helps your search engine rankings too… SCORE!

The better your social media is doing, the better you stand with Google.

If you just so happen to search for Tide you may notice something. Twitter shows up right away. You don’t want to be the company that forces users to scroll and scroll to find your social platforms. To put a stop to the scrolling and increase your content visibility, keep in mind that SMO and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) go together, so you’ll need both to succeed.

Ensure your content rises alongside your company with the following tips:

  1. Hashtags are key.

Don’t be afraid to use them. If you are worried you aren’t connecting with enough people, add 1-3 relevant hashtags per post to allow visibility to those who don’t follow you; however, be weary of over-posting. Depending on the platform, don’t add so many hashtags that it becomes unprofessional or unattractive to the reader. This differs on different platforms. On Instagram and Pinterest, for example, use ample hashtags for maximum reach! As usual, quality is key! If you are not sure which hashtags to include, do your research.

  1. Share, share, and … share some more!

Make it known to the team in your business that sharing is caring. Not every post has to be liked, commented, and shared by the same exact employee, but a little love can go a long way. The more it is shared, the more likely it will be seen, shared with others, and so on. Social media platforms are all about just that: being social!

  1. Connect with other businesses!

If you live in the business world; the importance of networking is not new. Reach out, comment, share, and like other business’ posts. This normally ensures a pay it forward mentality for that company and allows the other business’ audience to get familiar with your name, visit your company, and maybe even reach out!

  1. Content is key.

Where you are in relation to your goals is a direct reflection of the effort you put forth to get there. If the work is below par, the results will be as well. Do your research, know what your target audience is looking for, and use that content. SEO will be reflected positively, and if it’s something your followers want to see, SMO benefits as well. Be cautious and do not overdo it with content-stuffing as this becomes an unattractive quality and turns users away. Be strategic and if you are unsure how to formulate a strategy, don’t be afraid to ask for help.

  1. Just be you!

Be authentic. That’s how you got their attention in the first place. People buy from brands they like. They follow brands they love. Don’t be afraid to be unique. The audience will thank you!
