Optimize PDF Files

Large files slow down page load speeds and can take up more storage space and bandwidth than necessary, which can result in overage charges on your hosting invoices

When it comes to PDFs, not optimizing the images in your PDFs can cause them to take up an unnecessary amount of space and bandwidth. Because PDFs can be created from so many different programs, there are many ways to make sure they are optimized for web use. Here are instructions for the most common programs:

Microsoft Word:

  1. Optimize the images before you add them to the Word Document. Make sure they are the precise size you want them to appear, without resizing them within Word, and make sure they are not a larger file size than they need to be.
  2. When saving it as PDF, save it as “Optimize for” – “Minimum size”

Adobe InDesign:

  1. Make sure that you have the images optimized as described above.
  2. Before you export the image, change the Adobe PDF presets by going to File>Adobe PDF Presets and choosing the smallest file size.

Acrobat Pro:

  1. If you open the PDF in Acrobat Pro, you can save it as a reduced file size PDF by going to File>Save as Other>Reduced File Size PDF
