Building Brand Awareness: “Content is King” – Bill Gates, January 1996

Bill Gates, best known as the founder of Microsoft, nailed it almost 30 years ago. In an essay, Gates wrote about how success in the future would be built on those who could provide the strongest and most valuable content on a consistent basis. He was correct then and his observation still rings true today.

Building a brand that consumers will flock to and want to interact with all starts with building brand awareness.

The secret to building brand awareness is to start with the audience’s needs in mind - and keeping them in mind- while releasing quality content that provides value to them. To do this, content creators must really make a true effort to understand the needs of their audience. Are you providing content because you think it's what they want to see, or is it really just what you want to show them. It's a very "give first" approach that, to some, feels counter-intuitive.

Social Media allows for the regular release of quality content on a scale unlike anything the world has ever seen, for free.

Well, it’s not free, nothing is. The cost of producing quality content is the most valuable commodity we have: time. But that’s okay because when a company invests its time, it shows the audience that it cares about them. Consumers want to work with companies that care about their needs and many seek them out! If your goal is to build your brand, you'd better be prepared to put your time where your mouth is!

Every company knows that if you want to get your product or service out there, you need to go to where the consumer is. Today’s consumer is on social media. When it comes to social media strategy, the best brands release selfless content with a goal of educating, entertaining, and inspiring the audience. These brands play the long game. They know that investments of content into various social media will pay dividends as brand awareness grows into brand loyalty. The companies that have won, are winning, and will continue to win are the ones who are focused on creating more than lifetime value. They create generational value for their consumers!

It is important to remember that the key to winning in social media marketing is the knowledge that you are only winning if your audience is first. It's a team sport! You're a team player, aren't you?

Join us next week for part four of this series where we will discuss the strategy of creating content and building a brand!
